(Gray News) — The 2-year-old son of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver died in June, the team confirmed in a statement.
“On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane wrote in a statement Saturday.
The news of the toddler’s death was revealed Friday by podcaster Tony Farmer. Several other outlets then reported that Oliver’s son died in June after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a home near Houston.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said on June 28 that deputies responded to the scene and the child was rushed to a hospital around 7:15 p.m., but he was later pronounced dead.
The medical examiner listed the death as an accidental drowning, according to the New York Times.
In a statement, Bills quarterback Josh Allen said the news was devastating.
“…as a teammate of him and as someone in this locker room, all we can do is love on him. There’s nothing that you can say to make the situation any better but except being there for him in whatever ways he needs. And that’s what we’re going to continue to do. And, that’s what teammates do. We love upon each other and try to hold each other up when we’re down. And I can’t imagine, what he’s going through,” Allen said.
Oliver is also father to a daughter, Ava, according to People.
