NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Forty-four people were arrested on federal indictments during a multi-agency initiative targeting illegal gun and drug sales in Nashville, federal officials and the Metro Nashville Police Department announced during a Monday morning press conference.
The operation, called Operation Last Call, involved the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Marshals Service and MNPD.
Authorities said undercover agents made controlled purchases of firearms and drugs in areas identified through a three-year review of shots-fired calls, shooting crimes and ballistic evidence.
Where did the investigations focus in Nashville?
Nashville Police Chief John Drake said the enforcement focused on areas where data showed elevated violent crime, including the Harding Place/I-24 corridor, Bell Road-Murfreesboro Pike area, Brick Church Pike-Trinity Lane corridor and the Napier-Sudekum neighborhood.
Guns and drugs seized
Officers and agents seized more than 160 firearms, including what officials described as assault-style rifles with high-capacity magazines, along with illegal machine-gun conversion devices.
Authorities also seized more than 2 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than 1 kilogram of fentanyl and more than half a kilogram of cocaine and crack cocaine.
Felons rearrested
Officials said 27 of the 44 people arrested had previous felony convictions. Additionally, 10 defendants were already on probation, parole, supervised release or bond at the time of the alleged offenses.
The indictments include allegations involving drug distribution, illegal firearm sales, possession of firearms by convicted felons, possession of machine-gun conversion devices and firearms used in drug trafficking crimes.
The cases are being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee.
